The Young SIETAR Education team is excited to announce that Christopher Deal, President-elect of SIETAR USA, will present at the beginning of June.  He will offer a new perspective on choosing a Master's Degree, inviting us to consider the role postgraduate study plays in our life, how it can take us where we want to go, and how it fits into our life paths.  From his standpoint as a US professional who has worked across different sectors, he will also discuss the extent to which an MA is necessary in the US and in the field generally.  He encourages YSians to consider ways that his advice fits or contrasts with their own cultures and will invite those present to participate in a discussion following his presentation."

Dr. Christopher Deal has been an intercultural trainer and teacher since 1993. He founded and manages the consulting firm Deal Global Communication and will in July 2012 begin serving as President of SIETAR-USA. He holds a PhD in Intercultural Communication from the University of New Mexico and is a faculty member for the Master of Arts in Intercultural Relations program of the Intercultural Communication Institute. He also produces videos on the subject of intercultural communication.

“Life in Belfast” will be the first-ever Young SIETAR webinar. Are you
wondering why this particular topic? It is not a coincidence that the
first session will be on Northern Ireland (and Belfast in particular).
After all, the region is not only a most interesting place with a long
history and a complex present. Belfast is also the location of our
upcoming 2012 Young SIETAR Congress to take place there this September
(6-9). As the registration for the Congress is already open (you can
find more information in YS website at www.youngsietar.org), we
thought it may be a good idea to give you a taste of this unique place
with Anne and Sabrina giving you the Belfast for beginners. They will cover
the basics but also share with you some curious facts & anecdotes. You
will also have a chance to ask any burning questions you may have:)
To be more specific on the contents of the hour-long session, Anne and
Sabrina would put a special emphasis on:
- a brief outline of the history of Northern Ireland (from the
Plantation of Ulster in the 1600s to the Partition of Ireland in the
early 1920s to the Troubles that started in the late 1960s to the Good
Friday Agreement of 1998 and the consecutive Anglo-Irish Agreement and
an uneasy Peace),
- a clarification that the Catholic/Protestant 'divide' is not that
much about religion but rather about labelling two disparate cultural
groups (the indigenous and the incomers),
- an outline of the  Catholic=Nationalist=Republican vs.
Protestant=Unionist=Loyalist stereotypes and how they are used
interchangeably (and not very precisely or correctly in many cases),
- trying to get away from the polarity that had dogged life 'up (t)here',
- practical observations & anecdotes.

Unity Within Diversity. Young SIETAR's 13th Annual Congress coming to Belfast, September 6-9, 2012

Unity Within Diversity

Young SIETAR's 13th Annual Congress coming to Belfast, September 6-9, 2012

Young SIETAR (Young Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research) is bringing the thirteenth edition of its Annual Congress to Belfast. The event is to be held September 6-9, 2012 in Belfast's. Finding Unity Within our Cultural Diversity is the theme of this year's edition. The Congress will bring together about 75-100 students, young professionals,  and experts in intercultural studies.

During four days the participants will explore various types of conflict, and more importantly, approaches to reach conflict resolution with an emphasis on intercultural situations. The attendees will also have a chance to analyse real-life conflict case studies and try to develop possible ways to resolve them. It will be equally important for the participants to meet the locals, to listen to their stories about experiencing the Troubles in Belfast and about Belfast's present, and to learn what could be the basis of understanding between cultures.

Further details on the 2012 Belfast Congress will be made available on the event's website http://tinyurl.com/yscongress2012 - it is also possible to sign up for the Congress newsletter with regular updates on the event (at http://eepurl.com/jHAyT).>

The previous editions of the Congress were held in a variety of locations, including Egypt, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Turkey. Each edition reunited between 50 and 100 participants of various backgrounds (students and professionals) in order to exchange knowledge and experience, share best practice and explore together the intercultural field.

Young SIETAR is a global network that provides an exciting opportunity to participate in the world of intercultural training, education and research. It is an international non-profit, member-run organisation, which combines the efforts of students and young professionals from a wide range of practical and academic disciplines, who share a common concern for intercultural topics. Through an array of activities Young SIETAR provides a unique opportunity to build bridges between students and professionals in a dynamic field that is educating a new generation of interculturalists. More information on Young SIETAR is available on its website www.youngsietar.org.

Thanks for getting things rolling here, Deborah.

Just for the sake of trying it out, attached is a review of a book which I worked my way through yesterday, a really interesting and useful approach to influencing others which I think has lots of cross-cultural adaptations and possibilities.

Best to all,
George
